First green hydrogen deliveries made from German plant that uses Sheffield technology

The first deliveries of green hydrogen have been made to Evonik’s chemical park in Marl, Germany, by RWE’s electrolysis plant in Lingen, 120km away.

This is a major milestone for RWE’s GET H2 Nukleus hydrogen project, the successful production and delivery of initial quantities of green hydrogen from the Lingen plant.

RWE is planning to build an electrolysis capacity of 300 megawatts (MW) on the site of the Emsland gas-fired power plant in three expansion stages by 2027. The aim of the Nukleus project is the large-scale, commercial production of green hydrogen, which will be supplied by RWE and its partners to industrial customers – initially in the states of Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia, later also in the Netherlands.

As part of the ongoing commissioning process, green hydrogen has been successfully produced and transported via approximately 120 km of hydrogen pipeline infrastructure for usage at Marl. This demonstrates the integration of large-scale hydrogen production, transport and industrial offtake, marking one of the first operational hydrogen value chains in Europe.

As part of the Nukleus project, Sheffield-based ITM Power and Linde Engineering are delivering two 100 MW plants to RWE in Lingen.
